How do I know the ashes I get back are really my pet's?

Worried about whether the ashes returned are really your pet's? What to ask a Hong Kong pet cremation company about records, single cremation and matching numbers.

On the day they say goodbye, many owners sign the form through tears and leave. A few days later, a quiet question arrives: “Are these ashes really theirs?” Asking that is not being suspicious. It comes from how much you care. Asking one or two extra questions when you choose a pet funeral company can bring a great deal of peace of mind afterwards.

Why this question matters

Between the moment your pet leaves home and the moment the ashes come back, several people and places are involved. There may be a driver, the team who receives your pet at the facility, the technician who carries out the cremation, and whoever packs and returns the ashes. Each handover is a point where a clear record helps.

Most companies take great care at every step. A good record is simply how they can show you that care, rather than asking you to take it on trust.

What “chain of custody” means

You may hear the phrase “chain of custody”. In plain terms, it is a running record of where your pet is, what is happening, and when, from the moment the company takes your pet into its care until the ashes are returned to you. Each time your pet moves to the next stage, a new entry is added.

You do not need to use the term yourself. You only need to ask whether such a record exists, and whether you can see it.

Questions to ask before you book

  1. Is each step from intake to cremation recorded with times? For example, when your pet was collected, when it arrived at the facility, when the cremation took place and when the ashes were ready. Ask whether these times are written down as they happen, not filled in afterwards.
  2. Does single cremation really mean one pet per chamber? Ask the question plainly. A trustworthy company will answer just as plainly. It is also fair to ask whether owners can witness the cremation, and how that is arranged.
  3. Is there a number or certificate to match when the ashes are returned? Ideally the same reference appears on your booking, on any tag that stays with your pet, and on the urn or certificate that comes back to you.
  4. How is group cremation handled? If you are considering it, ask how pets are grouped and whether any ashes are returned. Knowing this in advance avoids hurt later.
  5. Can I have a copy of the record? Some owners like to keep it. Others simply feel better knowing they could ask.

There is no need to ask every question in one go. Choose the ones that matter most to you.

When the ashes come home

When you receive the ashes, take a moment, when you feel ready, to check:

  • Your pet’s name and the reference number match your booking.
  • Any certificate shows the correct date and type of cremation.
  • The urn is the one you chose.

If something looks unclear, it is perfectly reasonable to call the company and ask. A spelling mistake or a missing document is usually easy to explain and put right. What matters is that you feel settled.

A gentle reminder

Feeling unsure does not mean you chose badly or loved your pet any less. Grief often brings these questions to the surface days later. Asking them is part of looking after your companion to the very end, and part of looking after yourself.

If you run a pet funeral service

Owners are asking these questions more openly, and a clear record makes them easier to answer. In Stribe POS, order confirmation creates a Chain of Custody record. Further entries record processing steps, including batch preparation and cremation completion. For group cremations, the batch screen shows the combined weight and configured maximum so staff can check before proceeding. You can look up the record to review the recorded steps.
